Students Yell for right

Students yelled in front of the ministry of education

5,000 high school students from schools in Bangkok assembled in front of the ministry of education and protested for the right of choosing classes themselves yesterday.

Students from facebook group which use the name “New Generation student” gathered into a group in front of the building carried plates and posters asking for a change to choose and enroll classes themselves. The group have more than 50,000 members throughout the country .

“The reason for doing this is to show that we want to choose what to  learn.” Jiraphat, the group leader said. “We believe that if we can choose what to take , we will be more happy and it will reduce the number of skipping classes.”

According to statistic from the ministry of education in 2011, 25% of high school skept classes that they hate or do not want to take and 21.2% fell on quizzes or tests from unwanted subjects. “We only want to choose and I think all students should have right to do this” Supaphat, one of the student said.

The protesting ended after the minister came out to make an agreement with them. He promised to consult about this as one of the main topic in the meeting later. The ministry committees had an emergency meeting later in the afternoon and it took more than 5 hours. Then they made a statement at 9 pm that they are planning to give students a freedom of choosing classes.

The stating contain the detail about the conclusion of the meeting that student will have a permission of choosing at least one class from science classes; biology, chemistry or physics and one from mathematics classes; trigonometry, algebra or geometry.

The minister will invite some of students from the group for consulting the topic on the next meeting which schedule by next month.
